How can I register for a LightningAid account?

If you are eligible for a LightningAid account, you will receive an invitation from to set up your account. Please do check your spam inbox as well if you are expecting the invitation but have not received it.

In order to register for an account, you will need to set up your user name, password and security code. We recommend taking note of all these details so that you can easily log in and use your account after registration. Please note that the user name and password fields are both case sensitive.

Do I need a valid mobile number to use my LightningAid account?

Yes, a valid mobile number is required as some actions will require a One-Time Password sent via SMS to your mobile phone for security reasons. Any valid global mobile number should work.

How can I log into my LightningAid account?

You can log into the LightningAid website at or download the "LightningAid Consumer" App and log into it.

Please note that the user name and password fields are case sensitive, and the email link from can only be used for the initial registration.

What is my security code?

The security code refers to the 4 digit code you would have set up during the registration process. Please make sure to have this ready as it will be required to make payments out of your account.

Where can I find my LightningAid payment account details?

Please click on the “info” button on the Account page to see your account details, including your sort code and account number. This can be used in the event that you would like to have funds transferred into your account.

What is the difference between a physical card and a virtual card?

Virtual cards can only be used for online payments, payments over the phone or at stores which are able to key in the card number on their terminal.

Physical cards can be used for payments in store as well. They are both debit cards, which draw from the balance on the account.

How can I view my virtual card details?

Please click on your virtual card and enter your security code to see your virtual card details. These are blacked out by default for security reasons.

Can I my LightningAid virtual card to mobile wallets like GooglePay or ApplePay?

Unfortunately LightningAid cards are not currently supported by GooglePay, ApplePay or SamsungPay. However, if you would like to use these payment channels, you may register for a Curve account at

This allows you to add your LightningAid virtual card (along with your other personal cards if this is useful) to a single Curve card, which is enabled on GooglePay and ApplePay.

I forgot my security code for my LightningAid card. Can I reset it?

Unfortunately, this cannot be reset for security reasons. Please put in a request to have this changed or to receive a new invitation through the chat window on the bottom right corner or by contact

How can I make a payment out to my own bank account?

In order to make a payment to your own bank account, all you need to do is to go to your ‘Payment management’ section. If you have previously added your payment details, you just need to click in ‘Choose an existing payee’ and select the one that corresponds to yours, fill in the amount and select the payment date followed by the confirmation.
In case you haven’t done it before, you will need to set up your bank account details as a new payee. For that, you will need to click in ‘New payee’, fill in the form with your account details and press save. You will be asked to enter the security code sent to your mobile to validate the creation of the payee. Now you just need to make a new payment selecting the payee you have just created.

Can I add other users to my LightningAid account?

Yes! You can add users, such as your family members, to the LighningAid account. You will be able to do that from the ‘Add new user’ option when you go to the ‘People’ section.
You will be asked to select the role type of that new user as well as to fill in the form with data like name, surname, email address and mobile phone.

How can I get more information or support on LightningAid?

For any questions related to LightningAid, including the use of the LightningAid app/website or your transactions on the account, you can contact the LightningAid team at or through the app/website’s messaging function.

How can I close my account?

If you would like to close your LightningAid account, please contact us and we can disable your account. However, we would suggest keeping the account open for now in case there are any opportunities for future grants. You can also use the account by issuing yourself with a LightningAid card and having this as an additional option to spend with.

How do I send payments to non UK accounts?

Currently, LightningAid only supports domestic payments to UK accounts, although this may change in the near future.
If you already have a UK bank account, you can transfer funds straight into this.
Otherwise, you can issue a LightningAid card to yourself by clicking on Cards->Issue New Card. The virtual card can be used immediately for online or phone payments, as well as stores which are able to key in card transactions.
Alternatively, you may consider opening an account with Revolut or Transferwise, which are usually quick to sign up for and enable accounts with multiple currencies.
